March 2008

So Prof. Davies was able to solve the problem I was having, it was just something really simple that I just couldn’t see because I was looking at the code too much. That the answer I’m going with and not the fact I may be retarded. After that I was able to get the confirm appointment page working and now a consultant can enter a date and time for each requested appointment. For the consultants I have a page that list all their confirmed appointments and when the date matches the current date, a link appears allowing them to complete a feedback form for the session. I will have the same type of setup for the students. I believe this was the best way to keep someone from filling out the form before actually going through at consultation. After I finish coding the student side of this I should be about 90% done. All that will be left is to generate the stats for the reports Ester needs to create at the end of each semester and to clean up the code and to do some error checking. I know that some of the fields right now are meant to be integers only but will accept characters right now, so I need to fix those. I had planned on changing the overall look of the site but I actually like the simple look of it but I may add a few things to the design.  I’m going to show the work I have done so far to Ester and her staff on Wednesday, so they can get a look at what they might be working with in the fall.  I also am trying to set up an appointment with that Patrick dude about the BLCS stuff for Prof. Rotter, but we can’t seem to pick a time that works.

I feel like I still haven’t adjusted to the time change yet or something.  I have the Consultant feedback form up, however it is still in test mode.  I am still having a problem with actually confirming the appointment though.  The update to the database doesn’t seem to be working but I can’t figure out why.  I asked Davis if he could check out my code and I’m waiting to hear back from him.  Once I get that working I’ll be able to add a button to the list of confirmed appointments on the Consultant’s main page.  Once I get this portion working properly I’ll be able to add the students feedback form with easy I believe.  I think I will have the students feedback form only appear on the actually date of their session, this way they do not fill out the form prior to the session.  If they have any appointments with the speaking center, a list of their confirmed appoints will be displayed just to remind them.

I honestly have not touched any of my code since the Thursday before spring break. I did talk with the speaking center, before I left for Europe, about how the handle a session if the consultant can not make it. The girl said that they rarely cancel a session and usually are able to find another consultant to fill the spot. I think I’m going to have it to where all consultants will be able to switch staff members for appointments in the database but to do this they will need a special password to confirm the switch. The password I trying to have be random and come from Ester Yook, so that staff members will not be able to change appointments already confirmed at will. I’m currently working on the code for the speaking center part of the appointment confirmation, where they confirm the appointment and attach a consultant to each requested appointment. Once done the appointment will only appear in for the student that requested the appointment and for the consultant assigned to it.
